Action Plan

Barchester Healthcare is a major independent provider of health and social care in the UK, with over 200 homes providing nursing care, residential care and supported living services. We offer support to older people living with dementia and to frail older people predominantly, with some specialised support for younger adults.

Commitment 1 - Relating to:

We will ensure within our care homes that provide Dementia Care that those living with dementia are supported to have a voice and live in a non judgemental homely environment. Staff will be trained in various elements of best practice dementia care to promote an ethos of inclusiveness, warmth, compassion and celebration.

How will your organisation achieve Commitment 1?

We will educate and train staff around the importance of inclusion and promotion of individual choice making for all our residents so we are meting all of their needs. Continuing with supporting exiting community links and also exploring any new links that our residents may wish to explore is embedded within our companies Dementia Strategy.

  • We have the right to be recognised as who we are, to make choices about our lives including taking risks, and to contribute to society. Our diagnosis should not define us, nor should we be ashamed of it.

Commitment 2 - Relating to:

At Barchester we have a team of knowledgeable Dementia Care Specialists that will ensure our staff are provided with the most up to date training whilst supporting and guiding staff to provide quality dementia care provision. We have developed the 10 60 06 dementia care programme that all our Dementia Care Services will undertake.

How will your organisation achieve Commitment 2?

We will roll out our 10 60 06 dementia programme to all our Dementia Care Services. This will ensure staff are knowledgeable and that environments support and promote well being along with ensuring there is a holistic approach to all care needs regardless of where a person is on their journey with dementia.

  • We have the right to an early and accurate diagnosis, and to receive evidence based, appropriate, compassionate and properly funded care and treatment, from trained people who understand us and how dementia affects us. This must meet our needs, wherever we live.

Commitment 3 - Relating to:

Barchester will actively continue maintain existing links and forge new ones with others who work in the field of dementia care looking at how Dementia Care can evolve and develop. We will always consult our resident's and families and actively listen and respect their views in relation to research.

How will your organisation achieve Commitment 3?

We will continue to work regularly in partnership with Universities and other groups to look at researching, implementing, evaluating dementia care innovations and best practices and ensure those living with dementia and their families are involved and their decisions fully respected.

  • We have the right to know about and decide if we want to be involved in research that looks at cause, cure and care for dementia and be supported to take part.
