Action Plan

Barchester Healthcare is a major independent provider of health and social care in the UK, with over 200 homes providing nursing care, residential care and supported living services. We offer support to older people living with dementia and to frail older people predominantly, with some specialised support for younger adults.

Commitment 1 - Relating to: Education & Training/Quality Standards

We will ensure within our care homes that provide Dementia Care that those living with dementia are supported and promoted to have a voice and live in a non judgemental homely environment. Staff will be trained in various elements of best practice dementia care to promote an ethos of Identity, Connectedness, Secruity, Autonomy, Meaning, Growth and Joy.

 

How will your organisation achieve Commitment 1?

 

We will educate and train staff with the most up to date, best practice skills and knowledge in line with Promoting Excellence and The Dementia Core Skills Education and Training Framework. Continuously including,supporting and promoting individual choice making for all our residents in a non judgemental enviroment will be be at the forfront of all that we do to ensure all needs and wishes are met. We will also continue to support  individuals with exisiting community links and foster new ones that our residents may wish to explore and ensure this is embedded within our companies Dementia Strategy.

  • We have the right to be recognised as who we are, to make choices about our lives including taking risks, and to contribute to society. Our diagnosis should not define us, nor should we be ashamed of it.

Commitment 2 - Relating to: Care Homes

At Barchester we have a team of extremely knowledgeable dedicated  Dementia Care Specialists that will ensure our staff are provided with the most up to date training whilst supporting and guiding staff to always provide the upmost quality dementia care provision. We have developed two dementia training awards that are alligned to the latest NICE guidelines on Dementia Care (Foundation and 10 60 06 ) that all our Dementia Care Services will undertake. This will ensure we are always putting those living with dementia first and formost and ensuring their voice is always heard and respected.

 

How will your organisation achieve Commitment 2?

 

We will roll out our Foundation and 10 60 06 dementia programmes to all our Dementia Care Services. This will ensure staff are confident and knowledgeable with the most up to date practices but also ensure that our environments are homely and promote a sense of purpose, latest technology is used to further enhance well being and meaningful engagement whilst ensuring there is an ongoing holistic approach to all care needs regardless of where a person is on their journey with dementia. We will always support and work in partnership with relatives and careres to and value their contribution.

Commitment 3 - Relating to:

Barchester Healthcare will actively continue maintain existing links and forge new ones with others who work in the field of dementia care looking at how Dementia Care can evolve and develop. We will always consult our resident's and families and actively listen and respect their views in relation to any research.

 

How will your organisation achieve Commitment 3?

 

We will continue to work regularly in partnership with Universities and other groups to look at researching, implementing and evaluating dementia care innovations and best practices and ensure those living with dementia and their families are involved and their decisions in relation to this fully respected. We have undertaken numerous pieces of research and and feel this is vital to ensure those living with dementia within care homes are provided with these opportunities should they chose to.

  • We have the right to know about and decide if we want to be involved in research that looks at cause, cure and care for dementia and be supported to take part.
