For Dementia Action Week 2019 we have produced a poster that can be displayed in hospitals that summarises the elements of the Dementia-Friendly Hospital Charter that people living with dementia and carers can see in clear view when they visit. The poster is available for all hospital trusts that are signed up to the Charter and aims to raise awareness of the standards of care that are expected and ultimately to improve the experience of people living with dementia and their carers when they visit hospital.
As the week continues we’ll be sharing more of the interviews we’ve done with the people that have been involved in developing the poster. Today we spoke to Rachel Thompson who is Admiral Nurse Professional & Practice Development Lead at Dementia UK:
How do you think the Dementia-Friendly Hospital Charter Poster will help people living with dementia and their carers when visiting hospital?
This summary of the Dementia Friendly Hospital Charter provides an easy access guide for people with dementia, their family carers and staff alike. It will help increase awareness and highlights how staff can improve the experience of hospital admission for those affected by dementia. This charter should act as a benchmark for all hospitals in driving forward improvements in dementia care, during what can be a stressful and worrying time for families.
Could you give us an example of a time when either you or a friend or family member have experienced good practice from a health professional in hospital relating to dementia care and support?
Recent examples provided by Admiral Nurses working in hospital settings include recognising and supporting family carers needs, helping both the person with dementia and their families understand treatments, facilitating involvement in care, support of John’s campaign and liaising with other professionals to ensure a smooth discharge.
What do you think is the most positive change that can be made going forward to improve the experiences of people living with dementia and their carers when they visit hospital?
For people with dementia and their families to feel they are informed, included and supported as individuals during their hospital stay and on discharge.
